Lulea, Sweden, November 7, 2013 – Netrounds, a provider of cloud-delivered solutions to automate testing and monitoring of network and application performance, today announced that they have released a free online video streaming assessment test (www.ott-er.net).

A recent study shows that online video streaming traffic rises more than 35% year over year, and Netflix alone now contributes to a third of peak downstream Internet bandwidth in North America, according to an analysis made by network equipment vendor Sandvine. This indicates that online video streaming is one of the key applications for broadband subscribers.

“In the massive shift from linear TV to on-demand TV delivered over the Internet, commonly referred to as over-the-top video, it is of highest interest to understand how well such services are experienced by end-users, and how well adapted the Internet infrastructure is to deliver sufficient quality. A problem is that existing Internet speedtest services are unable to predict video quality. By releasing our free online video streaming test, a type of speedtest service for video streaming, it is now possible to assess the user experience of over-the-top video over a certain connection.”, says Marcus Jonsson, Chief Marketing Officer at Netrounds.

The test method uses the subscribers’ ordinary web browsers to request real video streams from Netrounds’ servers. By using Netrounds’ measurement software embedded into media players in standard web browsers, the test fully captures the user experience, regardless of mobile or fixed terminals. For video distribution, Netrounds’ online streaming servers utilize the Amazon CloudFront platform, which is also used by Netflix and many others.
