NFV/SDN promises not just initial capital cost savings from moving purpose-built network resources to generic COTS hardware platforms, but ongoing operational benefits resulting from increased agility and automation – enhanced operational efficiency. In this context, T&M is evolving from lateral supportive functions today towards taking a more prominent, central role for the automation and orchestration of networks where service-level KPIs become key inputs for policy servers, controllers and orchestrators to close the loop, undertake corrective actions in real time and adjust (scale-in/scale-out) network resources in a flexible, agile and timely manner.

Rather than focusing on the health of Virtual Network Functions (VNF) from a passive resource perspective in the NVF/SDN space, T&M must focus on and address the quality of service from the end customer perspective around two pivotal questions: Has the service been provisioned properly right from the very beginning – before the customer starts using it? And once provisioned (and validated), are SLA requirements being met throughout its entire operational lifespan?

The concept of Orchestrated Assurance, which was conceived by Netrounds in partnership with Cisco during the completion of ETSI NFV PoC #36, builds upon the premise that (i) Service Activation Testing (SAT) must be part of the service provisioning process, and (ii) active, continuous monitoring must be included as part of the Network Service Descriptor (NSD) for continuous SLA validation, once the service has been successfully provisioned.

Netrounds’ solution provides Test Agents that are deployed as Virtual Test Agents (vTAs) and defined as Virtual Network Functions (VNF) that are enabled by a Service Orchestrator (SO) or NFV Orchestrator (NFVO). The solution allows the NSD onboarding process to seamlessly include the vTAs for end-to-end testing of the provisioned service.

The test and monitoring templates are built in Netrounds Control Center, the second component making up the Netrounds system. It includes the designer studio for building the tests, a graphical user interface for viewing all test reports and ongoing monitoring metrics, and report retrieval. The test and monitoring templates in Netrounds Control Center are driven through the Orchestrator by way of the complete read-write API. First, the activation test function is carried out, followed by the SLA-monitoring definition to be run continuously throughout the service lifetime.
