The opening remarks at the GEN14 conference by Metro Ethernet Forum was focused around “The Third Network”, where the challenge in the next coming years can be summarized in one word: Agility.

In other words, to overcome the challenge of taking weeks to set up a quality assured carrier Ethernet connection, to make it happen instantly. Everyone who knows the carrier OSS environment knows this is a huge challenge…

This is however necessary due to user demands, and to meet the requirements from cloud, NFV and SDN. The MEF is now aligning their forces to meet the challenge in everything from marketing committees to technical groups. It will take some time, but the work has already started.
